Minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan has promised to clean up the Taman Permata flats area, and seek expert’s advice on the unsafe structures while awaiting the state to confirm the alternative site.
PETALING JAYA: The Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government will clean up the Taman Permata flats area in Dengkil and engage experts to inspect the dilapidated flats while awaiting a permanent solution to the residents’ woes.
Its minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan said this in reference to the 100 residents of Taman Permata Block 5 who have been living in tents since early last month after the building was declared unsafe for habitation by the local council.
The federal government promised to build terrace houses for them in replacement with the state government providing a land for this purpose.
However, they have until today not done so, forcing the residents to camp-out with today its 51st day.
Abdul Rahman said today that the ministry was evaluating several alternatives to resolve the matter.
He also said the clean-up and the efforts to strengthen the building will be the interim measures.
“I seek your help in solving this problem – it is imperative that you co-operate with us by lobbying the state government to offer a suitable alternative land,” he said.
The ministry has claimed that the first land provided by the Selangor government, measuring 18 acres, is not suitable because it is situated in a water catchment area.
They told residents in a meeting yesterday that they have informed the state about this but did not receive a reply.
However, Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim claimed today that the state has written to the ministry a week ago, informing that the state needs an undertaking from the federal government before they can allocate an alternative site for building the terrace houses.
He said the undertaking is to ensure that the land will solely be used for the purpose of building the houses.
When asked on the location of the 30-acre land, Khalid said: “We are willing to identify the land. Moreover, we are willing to use state funds to acquire the land.”
The Taman Permata flats residents were formerly staying in the estates that make up Putrajaya today before they were evicted in 1998 to make way for the federal administration centre project.
They are temporarily housed at Taman Permata flats while awaiting the authorities to build the terrace houses as promised.
