Diesel spill under control, says S'gor exco Wong

The diesel spill that has caused water disruption in large parts of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur is under control, says Selangor exco Elizabeth Wong.

NONEShe said in a statement yesterday that oil booms have been placed to contain the spill and orders for a clean-up operation have been issued.

“To date, the source of the pollution is under control and the oil spill no longer enters the river and is contained by the oil booms instead.

“Traces of oil on Sungai Selangor is also at a minimum and is expected to return to normal at about 8pm after the cleanup is completed,” she said.

Contrary to Bernama’s report of an overturned tanker, Wong said the origin of the spill was traced to a garbage truck maintenance facility in an industrial area near Sungai Gong.

Wong, who also chairs a state committee on water pollution emergencies, said the Environment Department had ordered the facility to cease operations.
Water supply to return to normal
Meanwhile, she said on Twitter at about 1am today that water supply should return in the morning, but low water pressure is to be expected for the next 24 to 48 hours.

The Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) has earlier declared‘code red’ emergency after the diesel spill entered the water supply.

The water company said the spill had resulted in the closure of water treatment plans of Sungai Selangor phase one, two, and three as well as the Rantau Panjang water treatment plan.

The affected areas are Petaling, Kuala Lumpur, Gombak, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor and Kuala Langat.
