'Busy with MIC polls' quip gets DAP rep suspended

A DAP rep received marching orders following his remark that the Perak state legislative assembly speaker SK Devamany was too preoccupied with the MIC election.

Nga Kor Ming, the Kepayang assemblyperson, was suspended from the rest of today's proceedings.

"Nga ousted from Perak state legislative assembly by the speaker for the whole day for saying the speaker may be very busy with MIC election," wrote Perak opposition leader Nizar Jamaluddin on Twitter.
When contacted, Nga said that the speaker did not state which Standing Order he was invoking.

NONEHe explained that he had asked Devamany (right) if he was not allowing assemblypersons from asking supplementary questions during the winding-up session by the state executive council because he was trying to speed things along.

“I asked him, ‘Is the speaker very busy becaue of the MIC elections tomorrow?’ Suddenly he got very, very emotional, asked me to retract the question and switched off my microphone.

“Before I could explain, he said that as I did not want to retract it then I am suspended for the rest of the day. He then asked the bailiff to escort me out,” he said.

‘Cowboys in assembly’

Devamany also allegedly called Nga and his cousin, Sitiawan assemblyperson Nga Koo Ham “Cowboy 1 and Cowboy 2” for continuously trying to interject with questions.

“We were trying to get clarification on the Goods and Services Tax as the exco member who was winding up said it would not affect the people,” he said.

Nga said that the name-calling is “unparliamentarian” and the ousting “undemocratic” and unworthy of a country supposedly aspiring to be the world’s best democracy.

This is the latest in a series of opposition elected reps being suspended.

On Tuesday, PKR’s Semambu assemblyperson Lee Chean Chung and DAP’s Kota Sentosa assemblyperson Chong Chien Jen weresuspended from the Pahang and Sarawak assemblies respectively.

Chong was suspended indefinitely until the speaker deems he is fit to return to the state assembly.

Yesterday, DAP’s Batu Gajah MP V Sivakumar and PKR’s Subang MP R Sivarasa were also given the boot from the Dewan Rakyat.

Prior to that, PKR Padang Serai MP N Surendran was slapped with a six-month suspension.

Devamany is defending his vice-presidency in MIC tomorrow, where eight candidates are vying for the three veep spots.
