I'm doing this for the men in blue, says Ramli

Former Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Ramli Yusuff said his RM128 million legal action which he filed today is not for himself but for the betterment of the “men in blue”.

“The police force were demoralised at one stage from the moment a three-star general like me and my men were charged. Sometimes they are worried to use their own discretion to react.

“I plead for the police force to be more courageous and to fight for the cause (against crime). I am doing this for the sake of the ‘men in blue’, that is for the betterment of the police force. I thought of giving them moral courage so they would not be demoralised that I was charged,” he said.

NONERamli (right in photo) said he had served for 38 years in the police force, and during his time he and his officers had done a very good job.

“Despite this, they were charged in court and I think this was unfair. So I am doing this to protect our rights,” he said.

The former top cop was referring to the case where he was charged with non-declaration of purchase of two of shoplots in the city and allegedly not declaring his directorship in a company, when the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) told several media that they were investigating a RM27 million cop.

Brigadier-general Muhammad Yassin Yahya, who was with Ramli, who was then Sabah police chief, when they had boarded a police Cessna plane scouring Lahad Datu for security purposes, was also charged with perjury when he testified in Ramli’s abuse of power trial.

Ramli and Yassin were subsequently acquitted by the Kota Kinabalu court, where former inspector-general of police Musa Hassan had testified.

Six of Ramli’s men in the CCID who had arrested underworld kingpin Goh Cheng Poh (Tengku Goh) in Tangkak, Johor, were also charged with procuring false statements when the attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail, and Musa had allegedly used the MACC to turn-over the witnesses who implicated Goh.

However, these witnesses then made a statutory declaration alleging they were forced to turn-over by the MACC.
Why RM27 milion in exemplary damages

Ramli also said he chose today as this was the date he was charged six years ago.

When asked why he was also seeking RM27 million in exemplary damages, Ramli said they (defendants) claimed that he had the amount and hence, he was also suing them for that amount.

In the suit, Ramli named Abdul Gani in his personal capacity for malicious prosecution.

To questions on what sort of rights and privileges he was seeking to be restored since he had already received government compensation and reinstatement when he was acquitted, Ramli said he was seeking other damages.

He also emphasised that his suit today that includes Musa as one of the defendants, was different from the one which he settled amicably Musa two days ago.

“That was a defamation suit and this is for malicious prosecution and conspiracy,” he said.
Malaysiakini has contacted Abdul Gani via text and email and is awaiting his response.

The portal has also sent text messages to MACC chief commissioner Abu Kassim Mohamed and also former IGP Musa and is awaiting their response.
