Zunar's 'gift' for judges who dismissed his appeal

The Court of Appeal judges who upheld a High Court decision that the seizure of cartoonist Zunar's books was lawful are now owners of his latest book - 'Pirates of the Carry-BN'.

In a statement today, the political cartoonist said he hopes the "special gift" will help the judges understand political cartoons better.

NONE"I personally delivered the gift to the registration counter at the Palace of Justice building in Putrajaya yesterday.

"I hope the judges will read the book and have a better understanding of political cartoons and the role of political cartoonists in a democratic country," Zunar said.

His inscription in the book says:

"Dear Justice Abdul Aziz, Arif and David Wong... On 1st Nov 2013, you made a judgment: 'The police were right to detain me under the Sedition Act for publishing a comic book, Cartoon-O-Phobia in September 2010'.

"Please read this book and you will find that 'Drawing cartoon is not a crime!!' Sincerely, Zunar."

Justices Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahim, Mohd Arif Md Yusof and David Wong unanimously upheld the High Court decision that the seizure of Zunar's books in 2010 was lawful.

The seizures also delayed the publication of 'Pirates of Carry-BN' as 10 printers turned down the job.

They were apparently jittery as the printers of Zunar's earlier publications were also raided during the 2010 seizure of 'Cartoon-O-Phobia'.

NONEZunar, whose real name is Zulkiflee Anwar Haque, said one printer finally came forward to print the book, provided the company's name was not displayed and if printing was done only at night.

"It was like printing illicit pornography," Zunar toldMalaysiakini in an earlierinterview

The printer's name is blacked out in the book, which is now on sale, despite the Home Ministry requirement that the name of the printer is displayed in publications.
Those who wish to buy a copy and have it signed by Zunar can visit his booth tomorrow, located opposite My Hotel, Brickfields and behind the YMCA building between 10am to 6pm.
The book can also be bought online from Zunar's website.
