UM reminds students not to join Dec 31 rally

Universiti Malaya’s student affairs department has issued a reminder today for its students to stay away from the Dec 31 rally at Dataran Merdeka, saying that it is worried for the students’ safety.

In a statement published in the department's Facebook page today, it asked the students to not be involved in either the ‘Himpunan Guling Kerajaan’ (rally to topple the government) or ‘Rakyat Pilih Dataran Merdeka’ (people choose Dataran Merdeka).

The department said that it is worried for the safety of the students should they participate, though it did not give any stern warnings about the consequences of not complying with the reminder.

“It is made known that this rally is illegal and did not get any permits from authorities,” it said.

“The university authorities are concerned about the safety and future of the students and are afraid that it would cause problems especially during the exam season,” the reminder said.

“As such, students are reminded not to be involved directly or indirectly (in the rally),” it said.

The authenticity of the purported rally to topple the government has not been verified yet, with NGOs such as Turun and SAMM merely organising rallies to protest against the slew of price hikes that have increased the cost of living nationwide.

Both rallies against the price hikes will take place on Dec 31 as well, at Dataran Merdeka.
