'Why is a great leader standing in satay town?'

Mocking PKR deputy president Azmin Ali's statement, MCA has questioned why "world class leader" Anwar Ibrahim is contesting in a small satay town like Kajang.

"You think he is world class... Then why choose a small satay place to contest? Worse still, he doesn't want to become menteri besar," said party deputy president Wee Ka Siong.

Speaking to reporters after attending the MCA presidential council meeting, Wee was responding to Azmin (left), who said the people of Kajang should be grateful because a “world class and great leader” is contesting there.

The forthcoming by-election for the Kajang seat will see an MCA candidate being fielded by BN.

Wee believes that Anwar, who is also the Parliament opposition leader, will ultimately replace Abdul Khalid Ibrahim to become the next menteri besar of Selangor if he wins this by-election.

“Why can’t Anwar be frank and say outright that he want to become the MB?” he quizzed.

Wee also claimed that Anwar picked Kajang, where the Chinese vote is 41 percent, because he lacks confidence in the Malay voters of Selangor.

He said the Pakatan state government had shown its inconsistency over the Selangor Islamic Religious Department’s (JAIS) raid on the Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM), and this had annoyed the Malays.

“They have no confidence in (Malay voters), so they go for mixed areas (like Kajang),” he asserted.

Anwar slammed

Meanwhile, MCA president Liow Tiong Lai slammed Anwar, saying he had irritated the Chinese by initiating a by-election on the eve of Chinese New Year.

He said that Anwar did this just to fulfill his personal agenda - it was not for the public, the Chinese community, or the people as a whole.

Speaking in a press conference after chairing the meeting, Liow (right) also announced that the party has set up special action committees at the level of central, state and division leadership.

He also gave the thumbs-down to the suggestion by Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin of breaking the tradition that MCA contesting in Kajang be broken.

“It has always been MCA’s seat. The question doesn’t arise,” he said.

However Liow kept his cards regarding the candidate close to his chest, saying that the party’s choice would only be announced after the Election Commission had decided the dates for this by-election.

When asked if MCA has the confidence to take down its 'super heavyweight' opponent, Liow didn’t answer directly.

Instead he said that MCA has never given up serving the people despite the great defeat suffered in the last general election.

He also claimed that the response from the Chinese in terms of supporting MCA is positive since its party election last year.
