The first joke in the Year of the Horse is a proposal to field Lee Chong Wei to run for MCA in the Kajang by-election in a tough face-off with PKR advisor Anwar Ibrahim.
In the face of this astonishing suggestion, youth and sports minister Khairy Jamaluddin instantly jumped out to say that he would not allow anyone to have any ill intention on our Lee Chong Wei, and sure enough he himself doesn't want to see this happen, hoping instead that Umno could take the place of MCA in Kajang.
With MCA president Liow Tiong Lai claiming that anything could happen, all of a sudden this joke became a near possibility and a much talked about topic in town.
Indeed anything could happen in politics, but this looks more like a crazy farce than anything else. LCW has openly declared that he was shocked that his name was mentioned, and said frankly he had the least idea how this whole thing happened.
Having said that, there was a fierce uproar among the badminton fans nationwide who boisterously voiced their objection to fielding LCW in Kajang. "Come on, give our Datuk Lee a break!"
Politics is not about trying to be fashionable or funny. Stop exploiting LCW! He is a badminton player by profession. While he is called the world badminton champion, he has so far not won a title in world championships or the Olympics, which he must win to truly justify the world champion accolade. His ultimate goal is to claim the world championships and Olympic titles, not becoming a politician.
LCW is already 31 this year. We should give him more applause and encouragement to scale even greater heights in his sporting career, not in politics, less so in Kajang by-election. His battlefield is not the political arena but the badminton court, where he does best. Even if he fails to clinch the title fighting to the very last minute at the world championships or the Olympics, he remains very much the adored, respected and endeared national hero in the eyes of his many fans.
It is unprecedented for a sportsman to succeed in politics in this country. In the 1986 general elections, former national football team captain Soh Chin Aun a.k.a Towkay, ran for MCA in Kota Melaka and was slapped with a thumping defeat to the still new Lim Guan Eng by 17,606 majority votes! He used to help the national team secure the Olympics qualifiers on two occasions and during his prime, not even Korea and Japan could upset Malaysia in the field. Unfortunately, he was met with humiliating defeat as soon as he switched his career path.
All this shows that a good sportsman not necessarily makes a successful politician. Sending LCW to Kajang is like getting Liow Tiong Lai to represent Malaysia in Thomas Cup tournament. Absolutely ridiculous. - mysinchew
