Muhyiddin: BN won't make easy for Anwar

Barisan Nasional (BN) will not provide an easy passage for other candidates contesting in the Kajang by-election after the state seat has been vacated by its incumbent assemblyperson.

Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said although the seat was won by the PKR candidate in the last general election last year, voters in the area were being given another chance to select their representative.

"There are those who opine that there's no need (for BN) to contest the seat but personally I feel, based on our usual practice, we should provide voters in Kajang with a choice of candidates.

"I don't think we should make it easy for the opposition candidate, whether he is Anwar Ibrahim or someone else," he said at a news conference after making a surprise check on prices of goods in Section 16, Bandar Baru Bangi today.

On BN's choice of candidate for the by-election, Muhyddin who is also BN deputy chairperson, said this would be decided by the prime minister afer getting the views of other BN leaders following an announcement to be made by the Election Commission on the by-election.

"Traditionally, the Kajang constituency had been an MCA stronghold, but with the new party leadership, we may have a chance while testing the voters' acceptance of this new leadership," he said.

Lee Chin Cheh, a lawyer, won the seat with a 6,824-vote majority in a six-cornered fight against the BN, Berjasa and three independent candidates in the 13th general election last May.

On the schooling of four children of the Malaysian couple who are still detained in Sweden for alleged child abuse, Muhyiddin who is also education minister, said the Kelantan Education Department had today issued a letter to enable them to continue their schooling in Malaysia.

"Their schooling is not a problem for us. We will allow them to go to schools near to their place of residence.

"If they are not proficient in Bahasa Melayu, they will be given some special attention to assist them," he said.

The four siblings, Aishah, 14, Ammar, 12, Adam, 11, and Arif Azizul Raheem, 7, arrived at the Kuala Lumur International Airport from Stockholm last Saturday morning to be taken care of by their relatives in Malaysia.
