Anwar goes for PKR presidency despite risks

PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim officially entered the contest for the party's presidency today despite risk of disqualification by the Registrar of Societies (ROS) if he wins.

Anwar, who is en route to Permatang Pauh, Penang, had incumbent PKR deputy treasurer Low Chee Chong hand in his nomination papers for him at the party headquarters at 11am.

Former PKR deputy president Syed Husin Ali nominated Anwar, and it was seconded by Low.

Low said Anwar did not turn up himself as he needed some rest after returning from Kota Bharu last night.

In stark contrast to Anwar's move, DAP's Karpal Singh today resigned as party chairperson pending his appeal on his conviction for sedition for which he was fined RM4,000.

Likewise, Anwar is also appealing at the Federal Court over his five-year jail sentence for sodomy.

Under Section 9A(1)(b) of the Societies Act 1966, a person cannot become or remain an officer bearer of a registered society if he or she has been convicted of any offence and fined not less than RM2,000 or sentence to jail for a term not less than one year.

The nominations for the upcoming party election kicked off at 10am this morning and will close at 5pm.

Polls are expected to take place next month and will extend into May as party members elect leaders at several levels including branch, divisions and the central leadership.

'Smooth process'

Meanwhile, as at 3pm, Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution and PKR vice-president Tian Chua have submitted their nomination papers for PKR deputy president.

Among the top leaders vying for the four elected positions are PKR vice-president, namely Nurul Izzah Anwar, Mansor Othman, Fuziah Salleh, Baru Bian, N Surendran, Suresh Kumar and Mustafa Kamil Ayub.

Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah, Kuantan MP Fuziah and Nibong Tebal MP Mansor Othman are incumbents and are defending their position.

Meanwhile, Padang Serai MP Surendran who was previously an appointed vice-president is vying for an elected position.

The nomination process which is being conducted in three tents set up in front of the PKR headquarters, has thus far been smooth.
