Former minister Zaid Ibrahim has accused PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim of engineering the Kajang Move in a bid to save himself from his sodomy charge.
Zaid claimed Anwar, who is PKR's candidate for the Kajang by-election, wants to become Selangor menteri besar as leverage, should his previous acquittal of the charge be overturned.
"The reason for this by-election is because Anwar wants to use Selangor as his shield if he is found guilty.
"He wants to use the position of menteri besar as a shield," he said at a dinner with Kajang voters last night.
The event was held at a Malay restaurant in Kajang with about 50 supporters.
"He needs new strength because he fears to be sent to Sungai Buloh, but there's a prison here in Kajang too," he quipped.
Zaid, who decided to contest the by-election as an independent candidate against Anwar, added, "If we have done something, then we must take responsibility."
In January 2012, the Kuala Lumpur High Court found Anwar not guilty of sodomising his former aide Saiful Bukhari Azlan, but the prosecution has appealed the verdict at the Court of Appeal.
The hearing of the appeal has been set on March 6 and 7, less than a week before the Kajang by-election nomination day on March 11. Polling day is on March 23.
"Let's say if he (Anwar) wins in Kajang and become menteri besar but is found guilty, then there will be another by-election," said Zaid.
'Uncertain future'
He added speculatively that even if Anwar's acquittal was upheld this time, he may still have to face an appeal at the Federal Court level.
"Therefore to be safe, there is no need for Anwar Ibrahim. Zaid Ibrahim will be enough," he said.
Zaid added Khalid was already doing a good job and there was no need to replace him.
On his initial support for Anwar to become Selangor menteri besar, Zaid said he had backtracked after he found out that the matter was not a Pakatan Rakyat decision.
"I thought there was a consensus in Pakatan Rakyat but it turned out to be a coup (against Khalid)," he said.
Zaid also weighed in on Khalid's recent announcement to contest for the PKR deputy presidency, saying that Khalid should keep an eye on the party's electoral integrity.
"I hope he checks it, it was never about the support, it is the process that I had complained about," he said.
Zaid, a former PKR member, had also contested for the PKR deputy presidency in 2010 but dropped out after claiming of irregularities and subsequently quitting the party.
