Gerakan Youth: Open hearts to Obama's advice

Barack Obama's remarks on equality drew flak from Umno leaders, including former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, and Malay rights groups.

But Gerakan Youth believes that the US president was being sincere, and his advice must be accepted with an "open heart" by the federal government and opposition.

In a statement today, Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang (left) said both parties should not act in a "defensive" manner.

"Gerakan Youth believes the advice given by Obama is sincere in view to see our country prosper and progress to the next level along with other modern countries," he added.

He said while Malaysia has experienced "tremendous" growth over the past 57 years, there is still "ample room" for further progress.

"There's no need for any party to be defensive towards any views given to improve our country.

"There's still ample room for improvement in our country without discriminating anyone," he added.

Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Mahathir had both defended Malaysia against Obama's view.

Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim, on the other hand, agreed with Obama's stance on the plight of ethnic minorities in the country.

During his brief visit to Malaysia, Obama had said that Malaysia will not succeed if non-Muslims do not get equal opportunities.
