Ex-mufti brings calm to the storm in a choc-bar

YOURSAY ‘Is there a UV scanner that can detect money stained with porcine?’

'Why Cadbury, why not against corruption?'

Swipenter: I feel very disturbed by the demands and threats made by these Malay/Muslim NGOs of late especially the one concerning blood transfusion.

In the emergency room when it is a matter of life and death, does it matter to a Muslim that she/he gets the blood transfusion from a non-Muslim or she/he demands that it must be from a Muslim or the doctor may be sued once the she/he has recovered and found she/he was given ‘contaminated’ blood.

Has Ridhuan Tee Abdullah cleansed his "impure" blood with "pure" blood since his conversion? He may be scorned as impure by his co-religionists. Maybe it would be a prerequisite for all new converts to undergo blood transfusion to become "pure" Muslims.

Maybe Muslims and non-Muslims cannot even share the same space for the fear of contamination by the latter. When would this kind of insanity end?

ABC Tan: Former Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin is the one and only ulama in Malaysia we know who talks sense, befitting a clergyman.

Ratbatblue: I bet the most radical of responses (for example, cleansing of blood) must have come from the ‘holiest’ of them. This ‘holier than thou’ attitude is dangerous.

How do they know that the blood they are getting is not tainted in other ways? Normal screening will be carried out by the Blood Transfusion Services, but these are for tangible things.

When an issue like a strand of DNA is the cause of trouble, how will these zealots ascertain that the blood they are about to receive is "clean"?

The former mufti should openly question the validity of assumptions of the extremists. This person is to be well respected for his just and fair views.

Vijay47: As usual, Mohd Asri would unfortunately be the lone voice pointing out the local Muslim predilection with ignoring the more pressing issues confronting the community. And we all know what those countless issues are.

To stand in Cadbury's corner, there seems to be some dirty work at the crossroads. The 'porcine contamination' occurred not 'across the board' but only in respect of two particular flavours and for two specific batches.

Under such contained circumstances, couldn't someone have just slipped a drop or two of pork extract into the chocolate production material so that another vehement ‘Save the Religion’ operation could be launched?

No one would have forgotten the two gentlemen who went to church to steal Holy Communion. I await with bated breath the results of Cadbury's own or an independent party's analysis.

One of the great benefits of commenting in Malaysiakini is that you can change your nom de plume and race whenever you feel like it in some hopeful effort to confuse the enemy. The best part is, you don't even need to be from Kerala.

Kangkung: Asri, I truly salute you. Have you ever heard them screaming to have blood transfusions for having eaten stuff they have bought with 'duit haram' from corruption?

Gen2indian: Well said, ustaz. My belief in Islam as a gentle, tolerant and peaceful religion is reinforced every time you come out with your (learned) opinions. What we non-Muslims are fed daily are the rantings of supposedly Islamic Umno and their sycophants.

Ace: Threatening to harm another person or to burn a building, etc, have already been expressly declared acceptable by the home minister (as long as you are angry), the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), and some other religious personalities and also implied to be acceptable by the PM's deafening silence.

However, there is a caveat - those who threaten must be supporters of a certain party. For all other Malaysians, you will be arrested, handcuffed, detained and interrogated if you try anything remotely similar.

Unfortunately, what the respected Asri says will not matter here in this Bolehland.

Ramachandran Muniandy: Recently the Indonesian minister of pilgrimage was charged in court. He resigned immediately. In Malaysia, how ministers are proven corrupt but not even one resigned.

With such a record, the so-called Islamic NGOs want to take an international company, Cadbury, to court. What stupidity?

Casey919: This reminds me of the story of ‘A Pound of Flesh’. The story is about a wealthy skinny woman suing her neighbour for "stealing the aroma of her rich food".

She claimed that the neighbour is fat and healthy while she is skinny and weak because the "goodness” of her rich food were "smelled" by the neighbour.

The judge told the skinny wealthy woman she could have a pound of flesh of her neighbour; just the flesh and not the blood with it.

Those urging to burn down the Cadbury factory is like making a mountain out of a molehill.

Single Malt: I am sure there is porcine DNA in the air. There are pork sellers who not only sell pork but also touch ringgit bills that are exchanged and get into the hands of Muslims.

What is the religious department doing about it? Do Muslims receive non-Muslim blood during blood transfusion or is the blood segregated? Oh My God, what's happening to this country?

Apapunboleh: If there is a ultra-violet scanner that can detect banknotes stained with porcine, one would not be surprised. -Mkini
