'Why Cadbury, why not against corruption?'

Former Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin has admonished Muslims for overreacting on two types of Cadbury chocolates that contained pork DNA but do not complain about other pressing issues, such as corruption, gambling or riba (interest rates) which are considered bigger sins.

Asri said in a Facebook posting that the adverse effects of corruption, gambling and riba are bigger than consuming pork.

“To protest against Cadbury is laudable as it is a consumer right, for they should not be cheated.

“However, overreacting on this, such as calling for changing the blood or others is ghuluw or extremism in religion. Islam is a simple religion and it does not burden followers on something that is cumbersome.

“Whoever has eaten a haram (forbidden) thing, unknowingly, has not committed a sin and would not be punished by Allah as the information (of the haram product) would have been beyond the person's knowledge or capability,” Asri said.

Unfortunately, he said, Muslims do not make enough noise on what is clearly haram, such as riba, corruption, abuse of public property and others like that.

'The Islamic misunderstanding'

“This is what is called the Islamic misunderstanding, which only considers 'consuming pork' as haram and nothing is felt about gambling, riba or corruption, for which the sin and effect are bigger than consuming pork,” he said.

Yesterday, more than a dozen Muslim NGOs called for a boycottof the chocolate maker following the discovery of pork DNA in two of its products, the Cadbury Dairy Milk Hazelnut and Cadbury Dairy Milk Roast Almond.

Some of the protesters even threatened to burn down the Cadbury factory.

Cadbury Malaysia has recalled the two products following the Health Ministry's findings last Saturday that the two items contain traces of porcine DNA.

“We are undertaking a full review of the supply chain to ensure all quality standards continue to be met,” Cadbury said.

“We employ stringent quality procedures to ensure that our products are of the highest standard of safety and quality.”
