KJ: Private apology over Youth protest sufficient

Umno youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar will not be issuing a public apology for the fracas outside the opposition party’s headquarters, saying the private apology he sent to DAP two weeks ago should suffice.

“Whether it is private or public, it is the same thing. I have already said that as far as the damage to DAP property is concerned, I have conveyed my apologies and I have offered to pay for that.

“I think that should be sufficient,” he said at press conference today.

He was asked to respond to DAP party strategist Ong Kian Ming’s statement that only a public apology would be satisfactory.

Khairy had sent an apology on the protest by Umno Youth members, which resulted in damage to the DAP signboard, to Ong in a personal message via Twitter.

The protesters had also threatened burn down the DAP headquarters.

'Ask the party disciplinary board'

Asked about the investigations into the incident, Khairy said such investigations are normally conducted by the party’s disciplinary board, and questions should be directed to the board.

Khairy was officiating the convocation ceremony of the National Youth Skills Institute (IKBN) earlier today, in his capacity as the youth and sports minister.

He told reporters at a press conference after the ceremony that he hoped students who graduated from vocational and technical schools would be held in the same esteem as university graduates, as was the case in Japan, South Korea and Germany.

“I ask that there should be a change in perception among employers, parents and students themselves, so that those who take on a vocational career and educational path was as capable in terms of marketability and skills as those who go to the ivory towers.

“They are both important,” Khairy added.
