Minister wants action on Bible poster hoax

Minister in charge of unity Joseph Kurup has urged for action to be taken against those responsible for the hoax poster claiming that Bible Society Malaysia (BSM) will hold a demonstration over the seized bibles.

“I strongly condemned the 'Himpunan Bible' poster hoax and urge BSM to lodge a police report immediately so that the police can initiate an investigation into the motive or agenda behind such an irresponsible act.

“Swift actions should be taken against the perpetrators,” he said in a statement.

Malaysiakini yesterday reported that BSMdenied it is hosting a “peace walk” to urge the authorities to return the 321 Malay and Iban-language bibles seized from its premise in January.

The poster, circulated online, states that the rally will be from Gospel Hall KL to Dataran Merdeka this Sunday.

Gospel Hall KL has also denied that it is involved in any “peace walk”.

Reject the religious bigots

Meanwhile, Kurup (right) urge all not to join any rally on the matter and to understand the gravity of the situation.

“We can’t allow a small group of religious hardliners to create animosity and disunity amongst peace loving Malaysians…

“Please do not allow ourselves to be further hoodwinked by religious bigots and hardliners who are bent on dividing us,” he said.

Earlier, a group of youth activists said that they are mulling a rally if the seized bibles, which use the word ‘Allah’ to refer to God, are destroyed.

This is as the Selangor Islamic Affairs Council (Mais) said it has the powers to destroy the holy books, after the attorney-general said the matter is closed without prosecution.

However, yesterday Mais said it has passed the items to the deputy public prosecutor in the interest of harmony.

It, however, still refuses to return the holy books to BSM, which it insists breached a state enactment that bans non-Muslim from using the word ‘Allah’.
