New ministers urged to right Umno's wrongs

The three newly-minted ministers from MCA and Gerakan have been urged to put right previous wrongs by Umno ministers while they were absent from the cabinet.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said this includes asking Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (right) to apologise for calling the Chinese community "ungrateful" and endorsing a cow head attack on a Hindu state assemblyperson.

"What is the point of becoming a cabinet minister if they remain silent and dare not speak up in cabinet meetings what they had loudly opposed outside in the press?" he said in a statement today.

He was referring to MCA president Liow Tiong Lai who was on Friday sworn in as Transport Minister as well as Gerakan president Mah Siew Keong and MCA deputy president Wee Ka Siong who were appointed as Ministers in the Prime Minister's Department.

Guan Eng, who is also Penang chief minister, said the trio should raise the issue in their first cabinet meeting next Wednesday.

"All three new MCA and Gerakan cabinet ministers should then report to the public whether they raised these issues and what is the Cabinet’s decision.

'Raise hudud in cabinet too'

"As long as MCA and Gerakan cannot change policy under the shadow of Umno’s dominance, it does not matter to the public how many Ministers they have.

"It is not the public but MCA leaders who benefit by enjoying the perks and privileges of ministerial office," he said.

Echoing this was DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang(right) who said the three ministers must also raise the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Jamil Khir Baharom's parliamentary statements which claimed Malaysia was not a secular nation and another endorsing hudud law in Kelantan.

"All Malaysians will be waiting for the outcome of the cabinet meeting next Wednesday July 2 as to whether the three new ministers would dare to uphold BN consensus and established policies by demanding that Jamil Khir retract these two parliamentary statements which clearly violate BN consensus and established policies," he said in a statement today.

Kit Siang quoted Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikkhism and Taoism (MCCBCHST) president Jagir Singh who said historical documents showed Malaysia's founding father intended the nation to be secular.
