Raya day haze hits very unhealthy mark


The quality of air was at an unhealthy level in Tanjung Malim, Perak; Sibu, Sarawak; and Kuala Selangor and Port Klang in Selangor as at 7am today, with the Air Pollutant Index (API) exceeding 100.

According to the portal of the Department of Environment (DoE), the API reading at Sibu (196), Port Klang (137), Kuala Selangor (120) and Tanjung Malim (102).

The API for other areas in the country was either moderate or good.

Meanwhile as the day progressed, the air quality in Sibu worsened, with the API at 5 pm being at the 'very  unhealthy' level of 214, up from the 'unhealthy' level of 188 at noon, according  to the DOE.        

The DOE portal said the API for six other areas was at the unhealthy level, being Port Klang (147), Kuala Selangor (110), Banting (106) and Shah Alam  (101) in Selangor and Samarahan (108) and Sri Aman (106) in Sarawak.        

Thirty-seven places had a moderate API reading, among them Batu Muda (98)  and Cheras (90) in Kuala Lumpur; Tanjung Malim (96) and SK Jalan Pegoh, Ipoh  (87) in Perak; Petaling Jaya (89) in Selangor; SMK Tanjung Chat, Kota Baharu(88)  in Kelantan; Kuching (88) in Sarawak and Putrajaya (86).             

An API reading of between 0 and 50 is considered good; 51 to 100, moderate; 101 to 200, unhealthy; 201 to 300, very unhealthy; and 301 and above, hazardous.

Members of the public can refer to the DOE portal to find out the API reading for their areas.
