Will Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail's contract be renewed for another term or will Malaysia see a new Attorney-General, asked Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia today.
A column by Awang Selamat, the pseudonym for the Malay daily's collective editorial team, said talks were rife among the legal fraternity that this would be Gani's last term, after having served as the A-G for 12 years.
He said in Mingguan Malaysia, the weekend edition of the paper, speculation was rife that several candidates have been identified to fill the hot seat.
"If the speculations are true, Awang is excited to know who will this new face be... as everyone knows, the A-G seat is a hot one, what with the current challenging political landscape."
Awang said anyone who is appointed as the next A-G must be brave, confident, capable and have a high-level of self-confidence.
"Let us see who this person will be," he said, in the report.
Over the years, many, especially the Opposition, have been questioning whether Abdul Gani is competent to remain in office following several controversial and doubtful decisions made by him.
This ranged from the A-G Chambers' decision not to act against Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali's threat to burn Malay Bibles, claims on Pulau Batu Puteh between Malaysia and Singapore, to the decision to appoint Umno lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah as deputy public prosecutor in appealing against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's acquittal in sodomy.
Gani assumed office in 2002 and is expected to retire in October.
