KOTA TINGGI: The public, especially the elderly in Johor are advised not to fall prey to certain people out to make a fast buck selling stones alleged to have “magical” powers and that were highly valuable.
On Thursday, a 69-year-old man from Felda Bukit Aping Timur, Kota Tinggi, lost about RM11,600 to three suspects who claimed they had the “magical” stone.
Kota Tinggi District Police chief Supt Rahmat Othman said the stone was fake and designed to emit light when reacting to water, a ploy that was successful in convincing the victim of the “power” of the stone.
“The group uses crafty tactics by placing the stone in an antique container making it seem valuable and expensive,” he said in a statement here, today.
Rahmat said according to the group’s modus operandi, the suspect would meet and convince the victim about the stone before contacting his friend who he claimed was an expert in the matter.
“The victim will be asked to take out all the money in his Tabung Haji account in addition to the money he has on him,” he added.
