KUALA LUMPUR: Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has urged Prime Minster Najib Razak to be bold in his actions in order to ensure that Malaysia becomes a truly moderate country.
In a series of tweets, Zaid took a jab at government officials whom he claimed did not practice moderation in their administration.
“Mr PM Islam is a religion of peace and moderation; that we know. But some of the Muslims in your govt are far from moderate,” he wrote.
“U (sic) as PM must go beyond making nice speeches with endless platitudes; you must by action ensure that Muslims do justice to Islam”.
Zaid prompted the prime minister to disregard the voices of dissent if he truly wanted a moderate Malaysia.
“Show that you want Malaysia (to be) a truly moderate and peaceful country, if that means you have to incur the wrath of some so be it.”
This call for action came following a statement made by Najib rejecting the idea of gay pride parades being held locally since Islam was a religion of moderation that did not encourage extremes.
