The decision to hospitalise jailed PKR de facto chief Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim rests with the 17 specialists responsible for his medical treatment, said Deputy Director-General of Health Datuk Dr Jeyaindran Sinnadurai.
Dr Jeyaindran, who heads a team of specialists treating Anwar, added that the former opposition leader would only be brought to the hospital if the need arose.
"If he wants to be treated at the hospital, the decision depends on his health and the views of the specialists treating him.
Dr Jeyaindran said the panel would decide on the matter after consulting a specialist hired by Anwar's family, who had examined him on Monday.
He said that Monday's examination was the third of its kind conducted on Anwar as the former Permatang Pauh MP had already been examined by a specialist from the panel and another from Hospital Kuala Lumpur.
His comments come as opposition leader Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail urges the Health Ministry to admit her husband to hospital due to his worsening health.
She said the move would allow him easier and more frequent access to medical treatment, particularly physiotherapy for his shoulder injury.
She added that warding Anwar would also be more convenient for his doctors.
Dr Jeyaindran said all patients at the prison received the same treatment.
"We don't do this for Anwar Ibrahim alone, all patients at the prison receive the same treatment. This is a normal process. There are acts concerning prison," said Dr Jeyaindran.
He added that the panel had decided Anwar should continue to receive medical treatment in prison as there were two medical officers on duty there every day.
He said he had yet to receive a report from the specialist chosen by Anwar's family.
"We will evaluate the opinion of all three specialists, and we are still waiting for the report from the specialist," he said.
Anwar began serving a five-year prison term at Sungai Buloh prison after the Federal Court upheld his sodomy conviction in February.
He was convicted of sodomising his former aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, in 2008. This was his second sodomy trial since his sacking from government in 1998.
Anwar’s family and lawyers have urged Putrajaya to provide swift medical treatment for the former opposition leader, who is suffering from weight loss, irregular blood pressure, a growth in the kidney, gastritis, arthritis and a shoulder muscle tear.
His lawyers had previously asked for him to be placed under house arrest for better access to medical care. In July, he was hospitalised for several days.
