NEW YORK: In keeping with United Nations General Assembly's (UNGA) theme on peace, security and human rights, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will speak on some of the challenges facing the world Saturday and share Malaysia's views on them.
He is scheduled to deliver Malaysia's national statement at the general debate of the 70th session of UNGA on Oct 1.
This session's theme "The UN at 70: The Road Ahead for Peace, Security and Human Rights" will focus on three areas; achieve new goals and commitments for sustainable development; strengthen the role of the UN on peace and security; and implement UN's work on human rights, governance, rule of law and gender.
Najib will have a full schedule from Saturday with a bilateral meeting, followed by the High-Level Roundtable on South-South Cooperation where China's President Xi Jinping will give the welcome address.
He will end the day with a gala dinner held in conjunction with the 150th anniversary of the International Telecommunications Union. The Prime Minister will receive an award for his contribution to developing the potential of information and communication technologies for sustainable development.
Briefing the Malaysian media at the Permanent Mission of Malaysia at New York, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman said that there would be a record number of about 170 heads of state participating in UNGA this year, providing an extensive platform for the exchange of views.
He shared the country's area of focus at UNGA as reflected by the meetings that Najib would be attending.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to attend the UN Summit for the Adoption of the Post-2015 Development Agenda and will join other leaders in adopting the 2030 Development Agenda for Sustainable Development. He will outline Malaysia's commitment and support for the 2030 Development Agenda and its implementation.
Najib will deliver a statement at the Global Leaders' Meeting on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment held to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action on gender equality and women's empowerment.
His participation in this event is a reflection of the Government's commitment towards the continued advancement of women in Malaysia, said Anifah.
On Monday, the first day of the general debate of the 70th session, Najib will deliver a statement at the Leaders' Summit on Peacekeeping. The objective of the summit is to renew the commitment of member states towards strengthening UN peacekeeping missions.
The next day, the Prime Minister is expected to deliver a statement at the Leaders' Summit on Countering ISIL and Violent Extremism. The summit will provide a platform for UN member states to take stock of the progress made so far in combating ISIL and discuss future measures.
Najib will also participate in the Meeting of the Heads of Governments of the Countries Participating in the MH17 Joint Investigation Team (JIT), comprising Australia, Belgium, the Netherlands, Ukraine and Malaysia. The meeting is expected to reaffirm the continued and common resolve of the JIT countries to pursue accountability of the perpetrators and seek justice for the victims and their loved ones.
The Prime Minister will chair the 5th Global Science and Innovation Advisory Council Meeting (GSIAC). The GSIAC initiative aids the Government's transformation agenda by boosting Malaysia's capacity in science and innovation and providing strategic direction for the development of the biotechnology industry.
On the sidelines of UNGA, Najib will hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders to exchange views on issues of mutual concern and to further strengthen bilateral relations.
He will also make time for meetings with US business leaders and industry captains, and Malaysians and students.
The Prime Minister who arrived in New York with his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor on Wednesday evening, is also accompanied by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh; Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Madius Tangau; and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar. -Star
