Certain irresponsible quarters may be giving the wrong information causing confusion and harming the reputation and confidence in the system, says the association.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Association of Islamic Banking Institutions Malaysia (AIBIM) has refuted allegations that Islamic banking oppresses consumers, urging them to be aware of their rights and responsibilities in order to fully benefit from Islamic financial institutions.
“However, customers should get clarification from the right sources especially from their financial institution and from AIBIM,” its president, Mohd Redza Shah Abdul Wahid, said in a statement.
He said AIBIM was concerned that certain irresponsible quarters might be giving the wrong information, including on syariah-related issues, causing confusion and harming the reputation and confidence in the Islamic finance system.
He also dismissed claims that customers of Islamic financial institutions were burdened by unfair contract terms and conditions, saying they are unjustifed.
“Amending the terms and conditions of an agreement cannot be done without the approval of both parties, based on the Contracts Act and the guidelines issued by the regulatory body,” he said.
The local Islamic banking industry was constantly working to improve the quality of service and transparency in the marketing of its products and services, he stressed.
“These efforts include giving views and information to customers in line with the Islamic Financial Services Act 2013,” he added.
