Many have been conned into parting with their money by online strangers, says Penang Gerakan women's chief.
GEORGE TOWN: Penang Gerakan women’s wing has warned Malaysians not to fall prey to online casanovas who have milked many people of millions of ringgit through cyber scams.
The movement’s chief, Hartini Tan Abdullah, said reports revealed that Malaysians had lost RM11.4 million in 1,139 cyber scams in the past two years.
She called on the police to upgrade their skills to tackle these online crimes.
Speaking at a press conference at Penang Gerakan headquarters here today, Hartini cautioned women not to fall prey to internet scams and sweet talk by online strangers.
She said people should not fall into a virtual fantasy of the cyber world.
“Women should be more alert and, not fall for the online casanovas and suffer financial losses,” she warned.
Earlier, she revealed that a 32-year-old married woman was cheated RM126,000 by an online casanova early this month.
She said the woman, who has two children, came to know the casanova through Facebook in the middle of the year.
The woman, who wanted to be addressed only as “Madam Ong”, was told by her online lover that he would be sending her a package, containing cash and jewellery items soon.
The victim was also told to deposit some money into an account number given by the casanova to receive the package.
She heeded the request and made 19 cash deposits to the account.
But the package never came, and the woman finally realised the scam when she could not reach her online lover.
She has since lodged a police report and a complaint at the Gerakan office.
