Any attempt to oust Muhyiddin Yassin as Umno deputy president will be an insult to the party grassroots who elected him, warned Pagoh Umno Youth chief Mohd Zaid Abd Rahman.
Furthermore, he cautioned that removing Muhyiddin would have an adverse effect on Umno.
"Expelling Muhyiddin would erode confidence of the members, especially the younger generation, towards Umno.
"This is because Muhyiddin is known as a leader who has made immense contributions and serves as an inspiration for the younger generation because of the courage to state the truth," he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.
Mohd Zaid pointed out that Muhyiddin, who is also the Pagoh MP, is known as an ultra-Malay leader who is consistent with his stand.
He said Umno cannot risk losing the support of the younger generation if it wanted to win in the next general election.
"The leadership crisis in Umno now should not be happening unless it is being sponsored by certain quarters to garner profit and political mileage," he added.
Mohd Zaid said if it was indeed true that a plot had been hatched to oust Muhyiddin, the move must be stopped.
Yesterday, Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Md Yunus confirmed the existence of the plot, but this was dismissed by Tourism and Culture Minister Mohd Nazri Aziz.
Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor also warned that seven Umno leaders, who are being monitored for disciplinary breaches, might be suspended from their positions.
However, these leaders were not named.
Muhyiddin was removed as deputy prime minister late July following his critical remarks on 1MDB, which is the brainchild of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak. -Mkini
