Despite the flood of criticism, the deputy minister continues to advocate that Malaysians take on two jobs in order to cope with rising costs.
KUALA LUMPUR: Unfazed by the onslaught of public rebuke, Ahmad Maslan has suggested Malaysians use Airbnb.com for cheaper holidays and to generate additional income in order to cope with the rising cost of living.
He wrote: “Airbnb.com list of homestays for 190 countries including Msia. Vacation cost is cheap and owners make income,” and attached 2 screengrabs of the global website as reference.
Airbnb.com is a global website for local hosts to list their properties as short-term lodgings to visitors.
His remark comes a day after he suggested Malaysians take two jobs in order to keep up with the rising cost of living. The comment has sparked outrage from all quarters and spawned the Twitter hashtag #2kerja.
Defending his statement, Ahmad Maslan later tweeted that he held three jobs – MP Pontian, deputy international trade and industry minister, Umno information chief.
Among the more popular reactions trending on the internet, local comedian Harith Iskandar wrote on his Facebook, that being a comedian, emcee, writer, actor, coach, and director didn’t mean that he had six jobs, “it means I do 6 different things.”
“In the context of a government servant you could say I hold 6 different posts,” he said.
“A job is something you do every day all day. So for a person to have TWO jobs that would mean they work minimum 2 x 8 hour shifts a day. That’s 16 working hours. A day,” he added.
