As oil price plunges, expect more cutbacks

YOURSAY | ‘When oil price was high, the government spent as if there is no tomorrow.’
Ian2003: Before crude oil went to a high of US$114.81, it was at about the current level or even lower and we were getting along very well.
When times were good, the government’s revenue was grossly misspend, misused and mismanaged.
Now the government is asking citizens to subsidise it by paying more at the pump stations. In addition, the tightening of the budget is in the area of education and yet the PM’s Department budget is untouched.
Goldee: Yes, when the oil price was high, the government spent as if there is no tomorrow.
Now the crude oil price slumped they now feel the pinch and start to cut corners in order to stay afloat.
Appum: As I was reading this news report, what strikes me first was whether it is a broad and general ruling, or one directed at only a specific group.
Reading on, it was clear that the scholarships are withdrawn from the “non-favoured” group of students.
We can understand when the nation is facing financial constraints, such measures ought to be introduced in the interim. But this cannot affect some Malaysians and not affect other Malaysians.
But this is Umno's kind of governance. We can't tolerate such discriminatory policies. That is why Umno must go in the next GE.
You see, MCA can only bring up matters but have no power to influence the matter.
Anonymous #07451242: Here’s a very simple solution. The Public Service Department (JPA) should reduce the quantum of the scholarships being awarded to students to study both locally and abroad.
Presently, some students after paying off tuition fees and money for living expenses can still afford to contribute part of the allowance to their family back home.
Many government scholars live very comfortably compared to self-sponsored students. Students doing masters and PhD programmes are getting huge scholarship amounts to have their families abroad.
Cut down all this, I am sure many new students can be given scholarships.
Roguekiller: MCA, the answer is not, "I don't know and I have not heard of."
Deputy president Wee Ka Siong, you are a minister in the PM’s Department yet you have no idea what is going on?
Anonymous 122461436161429: Aren't you in the government, MCA? How can you say you don't know how the economic situation will develop?
You ought to know and ought to have put mitigating measures in place. Did you and your appointees in cabinet govern at all or just fought for ministerial posts?
BumiKita: Is it a ‘wayang’ to show rakyat that MCA still relevant to get back support from rakyat by announcing the withdrawal of scholarship by federal and later reinstate back the scholarship after talking to PM?
SelangorKu: This indeed is the unkindest cut of all. There is so much fat in the PM’s Office budget which can be immediately cut.
A deputy minister said we need to work two or three jobs to survive. For a start, we should appoint one minister for three ministries, supported only by three deputy ministers.
Fair&Just: We are suffering in spite of having abundant resources and wealth. This is retribution for all the evil excesses and corruption in Bohongland.
You deserve the government you voted for and must also bear the suffering of those who voted against this corrupt regime.
Fairplayer: As long as the ringgit remains weak, the future for all Malaysians will be bleak.
High achievers will now have to look elsewhere for scholarships and financial aid, or they might have to work part-time to put themselves through their degree courses.
We have now reached the point of "survival of the fittest". If high achievers are not "survivors", then they can't survive what is yet to come.
Needless to say, they can’t achieve what they dream or aim to accomplish.
Roar For Truth: This decision summarises the state of this administration - one of no vision, no concern for future human resource, no discernment to differentiate between what is critical (develop the youth for the future of this country) and what is non-essentials (like maintaining a fleet of private jets).
Gotcha: Government overspent when times were good. We must always have reserves to counter such scenarios.
It looks like we have been living from hand to mouth, and without any savings. -Mkini
