Ever since the demise of (old and original) UMNO and the creation of UMNO Baru (new UMNO as it is known today) by former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad after the 1988 Malaysian Judicial Crisis, the political party has been producing anything but clean and good leaders.Mahathir was a dictator. Badawi was a sleeping queen. Najib is a scandal king.
Prime Minister Najib Razak has so many scandals in his closet that it’s impossible to document the exact date when the first one started. While Mahathir’s scandals normally ended up with corruption and abuse of power at the other end, Najib’s closet has all the trophies that Mahathir had, only on a bigger scale – plus sex and murder scandals.
Najib was allegedly caught bonking singer and actress Ziana Zain in a Port Dickson hotel room, an offence under Syariah Law for “khalwat”. Naughty rumours and jokes on the street was wife Rosmah Mansor was so furious about the extramarital affair that she started learning to sing, with disastrous results, so that she could contain her husband’s sexual desire.
Later Najib was allegedly involved in the gruesome murder of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu, to whom the prime minister had anal sex, also an offence under Section 377 of Malaysia’s Penal Code. Just when Najib thought everything has been forgotten, Bernard Baiocco, 72, former president of Thales International Asia (Thint Asia), was indicted.
Apparently, Mr. Bernard was accused of paying commissions to Abdul Razak Baginda, the political analyst who was acquitted of the 2006 murder of Altantuya. While the new court case is not targeting Najib’s alleged involvement in the murder, it has everything to do with Najib’s potential involvement in the corruption involving 114 million Euros in “commission” in the purchase of Scorpene submarine.
But nothing beats Najib’s involvement in 1MDB’s RM42 billion scandal, RM2.6 billion “private donation” or SRC’s RM42 million mysterious money. Thesetriple scandals exploded last year. The PM had hoped for a closure by pawning national assets and treasures to China and Abu Dhabi, and having lame duck A.G. Apandi Ali declaring RM2.6 billion was a “gift” from Saudi royal family.
Interestingly, after Attorney General Apandi unilaterally declared his boss is not guilty of any criminal offences or corruption, his counterpart from Switzerland –Attorney General Michael Lauber – drops a bombshell. The Swiss A.G. said on Friday a criminal investigation into 1MDB had revealed that about US$4 billion appeared to have been misappropriated from Malaysian state companies.
The Swiss authorities had formally asked Malaysia to help with its probes into possible violations of Swiss laws related to bribery of foreign officials, misconduct in public office, money laundering and criminal mismanagement at the fund. It had identified at least 4 cases of alleged criminal conduct.
The 4 cases of suspected criminal conduct related to former 1MDB subsidiary SRC International, Petrosaudi, Genting/Tanjong and ADMIC between 2009 and 2013. What was damaging was the revelation on how attorney generals from both countries had met and discussed the 1MDB case in Zurich in September 2015, but the Malaysian officials urged the Swiss to abandonthe case.
Wait a minute, does this sound familiar? In July 2014, when the Government of New Zealand wrote to Malaysian high commission in Wellington asking it to “waive diplomatic immunity” for Muhammad Rizalman bin Ismail, not only Malaysia refused but instead sought to “seal the police file” and “withdraw all charges” on the sex maniac / rapist diplomat.
However, the 1MDB scandal is so wide spread that it involves not only Malaysia and Switzerland but also Hong Kong and United States. F.B.I is investigating Najib’s stepson Riza Aziz funding in real estate purchases and movie production and might close one eye in exchange of making Najib their stooge. Hong Kong, under China’s instruction, might close both eyes in exchange for business deals.
But what does Najib Razak have to offer the super rich but neutral Switzerland which ranks top in several metrics of national performance, including government transparency, civil liberties, quality of life, economic competitiveness, and human development? Will Najib’s UMNO political party now screams Malay, Islam and the King are under Zurich’s attack?
Clearly, Najib administration is panicking because they didn’t expect the Swiss would do the unthinkable – make public their investigation findings. Deputy Prime Minister Zahid Hamidi has expressed his unhappiness over the Swiss authorities’ decision. What did Mr. Zahid hope Zurich would do to impress his boss? Did he expect Zurich to clear Najib Razak, the same way A.G. Apandi Ali did?
It seems with the exception of UMNO selected warlords who have been benefited from “gift” money extended by PM Najib Razak and A.G. Apandi Ali;nobody believes the Malaysian prime minister is innocent of 1MDB’s RM42 billion scandal, RM2.6 billion “private donation” or SRC’s RM42 million mysterious money.
And just like American TV series, Najib son of Razak’s multi-scandals enter itssecond season with lots of fireworks in the first month of the year. As the corruptions get international “recognition” with each passing day, don’t get mad but get popcorn. Surely A.G. Apandi Ali can convince A.G. Michael Lauber that Switzerland needs something from Malaysia. -financetwitter
