Police today denied classifying areas in the Klang Valley as being at risk of terrorist attacks, after social media postings listed spots purportedly targeted by militants.
Bukit Aman's head of corporate communications ACP Datin Asmawati Ahmad urged the public to stop sharing such news on the social media.
"There have been statements being shared on social media saying that certain areas are being targeted by terror groups wanting to attack Malaysia.
"But we never issued any statement mentioning any areas supposedly targeted by terrorists," she said in a statement today.
She said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar had only said that Malaysia was on alert and that security was heightened in public places.
"We have increased the number of personnel in public places to give people the assurance that we are prepared.
"As such, we take a serious view to spreading of such news as it has caused excessive worry and fear in people.
"We urge the people not to be too trusting of this and to stop sharing such news, especially when it is not from official security agencies," she said.
On Friday, Khalid reportedly said that Malaysia was on the highest alert as terrorism analysts said militant group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) was now spreading its operations beyond the Middle East and Europe to Asia.
Khalid said following the latest attacks in Jakarta, security measures were increased at malls and tourist spots.
He also said precautionary action would be implemented at border areas to prevent possible infiltration by terrorists.
