Lim Guan Eng takes Ahmad Maslan to task over "two jobs" proposal, says under Pakatan Harapan, Malaysians would be able to survive with one job.
PETALING JAYA: Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng says it is high time Malaysians put Barisan Nasional leaders like Ahmad Maslan out of their jobs so citizens can live with economic dignity on one job.
In his New Year’s message, Lim took the Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister to task for suggesting Malaysians work two jobs to supplement their income, and argued that if it ever came to that, there would be no difference between local and foreign workers.
Malaysians, the Bagan lawmaker said, did not deserve such economic servitude from Barisan Nasional.
“BN must be replaced in the next general election so that we do not become economic refugees or economic slaves in our own country,” he said in a statement.
The proposal by Ahmad, Lim added, meant the former was effectively conceding that BN has failed to manage the economy well.
Lim also said Ahmad had hit the height of arrogance by portraying himself as a model of hard work, and listing his three jobs namely as a Member of Parliament, deputy minister, and Umno Information Chief.
The DAP secretary-general also advised the Pontian MP not to attempt dragging him into his personal situation by equating the three jobs Ahmad had with the three jobs he had.
“Even though I wear many hats in my various responsibilities in government and to my political party, I have only one job – that is to serve the people.”
Lim went on to claim that under Pakatan Harapan, Malaysians would not need to hold at least two jobs to survive.
The Opposition coalition, he explained, would lighten the burden of 30 million Malaysians by abolishing the Goods and Services Tax.
Malaysians, Lim said, would still afford to receive BR1M – the cash aid – payouts without the GST by running a clean government and conducting open competitive tenders.
Ahmad, who was ridiculed for suggesting Malaysians work two jobs to make ends meet, later clarified his proposal had been taken out of context and that he meant Malaysians should venture into online businesses in addition to holding down their permanent day jobs.
