Unilateral conversions are only a minor part of a larger problem where Hindus are registered as Muslims, a task force comprising eight Hindu NGOs claimed.
The Hindu Conversion Action Team (HiCoat) claimed that out of 3,000 cases involving Hindu children being documented as Muslims, only 10 percent were due to unilateral conversions.
Taskforce chief Arun Dorasamy said 90 percent meanwhile were cases where children were raised as Hindus, had never practiced Islam, but were Muslim on paper.
"Unilateral conversions were never big for us. But when it happens it gets a lot of attention.
"For us, the biggest issue relates to minors - when kids are raised as Hindus but are documented as Muslims," Arun told Malaysiakini.
He cited a 2014 case, where the Selangor Islamic Department (Jais) stopped a Hindu wedding, suspecting that the bride was a Muslim.
The bride was raised as a Hindu, but said her father, who had abandoned her a long time ago, had been responsible for registering her as a Muslim.
Other examples Arun said, include children who were adopted from young by Hindu parents and raised as Hindus.
These cases he said, proved very problematic, as they could carry on for generations.
"(The Hindus registered as Muslims) will have ceremonial weddings, but don't get it registered, so their children will then face problems, and can be considered out of wedlock," Arun said.
Besides issues relating to minors, adults also face problems when they convert to Islam for marriage, but want to convert back when the relationship fails, Arun said.
Overall HiCoat estimates there are at least 7,000 cases of Hindus registered as Muslims.
However, the number could be much higher he said, claiming many fear being harassed by religious authorities if they came forward.
Arun however stressed that HiCoat's goals are not to convert Muslims to Hinduism, but rather to fix document errors.
He said he would do the same if a Muslim was wrongly registered as a Hindu.
To deal with the issue,HiCoat wants among others, special units to be set up by the National Registration Department and Syariah courts to handle religious status conflicts.
They also want an online registry of religious status conflicts.
Arun said the group had met Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nancy Shukri who understood the problems.
They plan to next meet with the Islamic Development Department (Jakim), as well as Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, to find a solution to this issue. -Mkini
