PETALING JAYA: The Sarawak Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) has been given the go-ahead to take legal action under Syariah law against individuals of the Millah Abraham cult if the group is suspected of spreading its deviant teachings.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Shukri said the matter was under the jurisdiction of both Jais and the Home Ministry, who were looking into the potential threats posed by the cult.
On Saturday, Sarawak police chief Muhammad Sabtu Osman said police were monitoring the movements of the cult after members in Simunjan, Kuching were found to be cultivating a piece of land in the district.
When asked if there were any Parti Pesaka Bumiputra (PBB) members involved in the cult, Nancy said that currently there was no information to that end.
“In PBB, we are all very close to each other. If anything like that happens, we would know right away,” Borneo Post Online reported her as saying after a PBB event in Kota Samarahan in Sarawak.
Meanwhile, in a separate report, Nancy praised Adenan Satem, saying that the Sarawak Chief Minister was a well-known political figure abroad.
She said during a visit to the UK, some Londoners expressed their desire to meet Adenan as they were impressed with his approach to certain issues in Sarawak.
Nancy said Adenan had made several decisions to ease the financial burdens of the people including abolishing highway tolls, reducing ferry fares and raising welfare aid.
Adenan’s popularity amongst the people has also been cited by some within the ruling coalition as well as political analysts as an important factor in the upcoming Sarawak election.
