PETALING JAYA: The Sarawak Report editor and long-standing critic of the current Malaysian administration has appeared to suggest that foreign intervention is necessary in order to rescue Malaysians from a supposed fear of their government.
“I think [Malaysians] feel disempowered, helpless,” Clare Rewcastle-Brown suggested when interviewed for Australian current affairs programme, Four Corners.
“I think after years and years of increasing dictatorial control, [Malaysians] no longer feel they have a democracy,” she suggested.
She said that there was “an absolute total fear among the people who should be taking action to see law and order enforced against Najib.”
A controversial episode entitled “State of Fear” aired on Australian TV last night appeared to demonise Prime Minister Najib Razak’s government, with Rewcastle-Brown even suggesting that the Malaysian government was resorting “to sheer intimidation and threats” to stay in power.
“[The Malaysian government is] no longer able to rely on the law enforcement to protect their position, and so they are letting people know that if they do cross them, they will resort to sheer intimidation,” Rewcastle-Brown claimed.
They are pulling charges out of the air to throw at people and shoving people in jail,” she added, even claiming further that “under current laws you can be thrown into jail and kept there for months without a court appearance.”
Asked what it was going to take for Malaysians to remove Najib from office, the controversial journalist replied, “I think that Malaysia is waiting for foreign action.”
She did not, however, specify what sort of foreign action Malaysians were hoping for.
