Former student activist hauled up under Sedition Act

Former Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM) student activist Ahmad Shukri Kamarudin has been detained by the police early this evening for a 2014 sedition investigation.
He is being held by Negeri Sembilan cops where he was arrested pending transfer to Johor police custody.
"He was detained at his house in Rembau (Negeri Sembilan) and was taken to the district's police headquarters where he is still held. He will be taken to IPD Johor Bharu Selatan," Bersih secretariat manager Mandeep Singh told Malaysiakini.
However Mandeep, who is in communication with Shukri and his wife, said that they were unsure why he was picked up.
"We don't know for what but that it was under the Sedition Act based on a 2014 police report," he said, adding that the cops were not forthcoming with the details.
Shukri was once active in the student movement and was one of nine arrested by police during an SMM rally for academic freedom and campus autonomy in 2010.
Once the SMM media secretary, Shukri was also investigated under the Sedition Act previously for allegedly making comments insulting to the Johor sultan on Twitter in 2012. -Mkini
