Vacancies for administrative officers advertised recently, including in several local Chinese dailies.
KUCHING: The Sarawak civil service has for the first time received job applications from Unified Examination Certificate-holders.
An official of the Human Resource Unit in the Chief Minister’s Department confirmed that UEC-holders were among those who responded to the recruitment drive that was advertised recently, including in several local Chinese dailies.
“We don’t know yet exactly how many UEC-holders have applied because we are still processing and vetting the applications,” she said when contacted.
The vacancies for 100 jobs in various departments and agencies were advertised last month and the closing date for applications was March 24.
UEC holders were invited to apply for the jobs following the announcement of Chief Minister Adenan Satem last September that the state would recognise UEC, which is issued by Chinese independent schools.
The posts were for Grade 41 administrative officers which are non-pensionable, with starting basic salaries of between RM1,910.02 and RM2,216.64.
The UEC recognition applies to state civil service jobs and Yayasan Sarawak scholarships.
Applicants must have at least a credit in the SPM Bahasa Melayu paper to qualify for the jobs and scholarships.
Adenan’s decision received wide praise from the Chinese community.
The UEC is a standardised test for Chinese independent high schools in Malaysia – including 14 in Sarawak – organised by Dong Zong, the United Chinese School Committees Association of Malaysia.
A Merdeka Center survey conducted in January this year showed the recognition of UEC came in as Adenan’s second most popular new policy behind his reiteration that English would be be the official language of Sarawak – together with Bahasa Malaysia.
The survey carried out among voters in Sarawak also showed Adenan’s popularity had risen to 81% from 74% last April.
