1MDB not an issue of corruption, says ex-MACC man

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has not investigated 1MDB because it is not an issue of corruption, claims a former official.
"This 1MDB, if you follow the statement of (deputy chief commissioner, operations) Mohd Shukri Abdull, MACC has not investigated because it is not an issue of corruption.
"It is an issue of investment, an issue of fraud, hence the police need to investigate, while for issues involving investment, Bank Negara will (investigate)," former MACC deputy chief commissioner Zakaria Jaffar said.
He was speaking at a question-and-answer session at a ceramah organised by Putrajaya PAS last night.
"MACC can only investigate if there is a new element of corruption.
"At this point there is nothing more, so 1MDB doesn't fall under MACC," he explained.
He added there is no investigation into Prime Minister Najib Razak because there are purportedly no reports lodged against him.
He said this when asked at the ceramah titled 'corruption and current issues' to comment on the 1MDB scandal.
Oath to Allah
During the event, Zakaria urged the public not to hurl accusations at MACC officers, because every one of them had taken an oath before Allah.
Since all the officers up to the top had taken the oath, they do not dare to do wrong, he said.

He added it is the public's duty to lodge reports to the commission.
"If MACC does nothing - that is, their task given by Allah - if they don't solve the problem then they have to answer to Allah," said Zakaria.
He urged those present to place their trust in the MACC.
"I do not want to have to answer to Allah (for any wrongdoing), this too is the same for my friends in MACC," he said.
The government has been criticised for its lethargy in investigating the 1MDB scandal, particularly after the US Department of Justice (DOJ) initiated a series of forfeiture suits last month to seize assets that had allegedly been purchased with funds embezzled from the Finance Ministry state investment arm. - Mkini
