KUALA LUMPUR: Any unauthorised redrawing of electoral boundaries is unconstitutional, unfair and tantamount to cheating and manipulating election results, warned Taiping MP Nga Kor Ming in a statement.
The Election Commission (EC) must provide valid reasons, within seven days, for redrawing electoral boundaries and the manner in which notice was given, he added.
Nga, who is also DAP Perak Chairman, pledged that he will consider lodging a police report and taking legal action to challenge the massive transfer of voters. “The EC was unconstitutional and unfair in transferring 118,774 voters.”
He described it as a dirty tactic to affect election results. “Most of the seats involved are marginal. These can affect the outcome on polling day.”
He charged the EC had misled the public by publishing a federal gazette that merely informed the public of changes to polling centres and districts. “It had actually redrawn the electoral boundaries for seats.”
He was protesting on the manner that the boundaries were redrawn. “Voters directly affected were not notified personally by any letter,” he said. “They only knew from the notice of changes to polling centres and district.”
“These were displayed at town council offices.”
The MP demanded the EC notify all affected voters on the exercise by mail. “Voters should not be caught by surprise on polling day.”
Briefly, the EC moved 118,774 voters to different state constituencies and 40,000 voters were moved to different parliamentary constituencies.
Nga cited the notice of polling districts and polling centres for the federal and state constituencies for Malaya, published on 29 April 2016.
He made comparisons with the electoral roll gazetted on 26 November 2014.
He reckons that Perak has the highest number of voters transferred.
Out of the 118,774 voters transferred, 30,173 voters were transferred in the state, representing 25.4 per cent of the total voters transferred.
