KUALA LUMPUR: Electoral watchdog Bersih 2.0 today withdrew its lawsuit against the Election Commission after it agreed to conduct a local inquiry proceeding.
The proceeding will be on the objection against the proposed redelineation exercise for the Segambut constituency.
Lawyer R Gokul, representing Bersih 2.0, said he had received a notice yesterday of the EC’s decision to have the local inquiry for Segambut.
“So, we have withdrawn the application due to the EC’s undertaking on the issue,” he said at the Jalan Duta court today.
The judicial review application on the rejection of delineation objection was made three weeks ago.
In welcoming the EC’s decision, Bersih 2.0 advocacy and education officer Zoe Randhawa said it was frustrating that they had to go through the courts to get the EC to act on the objection.
“There was no need to reject the local inquiry for Segambut,” she said.
EC, in a letter sighted by FMT, said it will conduct a local inquiry and Randhawa, as an applicant in the objection, was invited to the proceeding at a date to be confirmed later. -FMT
