More Kelantanese forced to evacuate due to floods

The 13,802 flood victims in Kelantan have been placed at 62 relief centres.

PETALING JAYA: More people have been forced to leave their homes in Kelantan due to worsening floods.

According to the state’s eBanjir website, the number of flood victims increased to 13,802 this morning, from 13,407 people yesterday.

Of the total number of victims, 5,301, or 38%, are children and 4,603, or 34%, are women.

They have been placed at 51 evacuation centres in Bachok, Kota Bharu, Kuala Krai, Machang, Pasir Mas, Tanah Merah, and Tumpat.

State Fire and Rescue Department deputy director for operations Hussin Ab Rahman said his department was more focused on Pengkalan Kubor and Tumpat districts.

“These places are top on our list because they are situated along Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang.

“We are monitoring the river as we are afraid it may overflow and flood the towns situated along the river,” he said.

The Drainage and Irrigation Department’s website showed the water level at Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang had reached a dangerous level at 10.16 metres.

Meanwhile, in Terengganu, the state’s eBanjir website showed the number of flood victims was down to 5,182 people.

A total of 75 evacuation centres in Besut, Dungun, Hulu Terengganu, Kemaman, Kuala Terengganu, Setiu and Marang house the evacuees.

Meanwhile, in Sabah, the Welfare Department’s InfoBanjir app recorded the number of flood victims at 161 people this morning. -FMT
