MP: Najib's silence on Trump's ban shows subservience to US

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's silence on US President Donald Trump's travel ban on Muslims shows that Malaysia has become subservient to both the United States and China, an Amanah lawmaker laments
"We are not only subservient to the US but also increasingly to Communist China by allowing it massive economic domination," Kuala Terengganu MP Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad said in a statement today.
Najib has been under fire for the rise in China's involvement in local development projects, with critics claiming that the country is being "sold" to China.
Meanwhile, critics are also piling pressure on Najib for not commenting on Trump's travel ban on the citizens of seven predominantly Muslim countries.
"How we miss the leadership Malaysia once had of voicing out for the weak, small Third World nations, when the world admired the courage and principles of our leaders," Raja Bahrin said.
Previously, the prime minister had been vocal in criticising Myanmar and its de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi over attacks on Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine state.
However, Raja Kamarul Bahrin said Najib only "hijacked the issue" with PAS after continued pressure from the opposition to censure Myanmar over the alleged atrocities.
The Amanah leader also rubbished Kinabatangan MP Bung Moktar Radin's assertions that it was inappropriate for Najib to condemn Trump, as the US president was fulfilling his election promises.
"By the same account, does that mean we should also allow Trump's pledge to move the American embassy to Jerusalem, thus recognising Israel's claim to the disputed city by the Muslim world?" Raja Kamarul Bahrin asked.
Silence related to 1MDB lawsuit?
He also asked if Najib's silence was related to the US Department of Justice's civil forfeiture suits related to 1MDB funds.
The DOJ claims that US$731 million "stolen" from 1MDB had made its way into the accounts of an unnamed Malaysian Official 1.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Abdul Rahman Dahlan has confirmed that Najib is MO1.
However, Najib has denied any wrongdoing in the 1MDB scandal, and has also been cleared of criminal misconduct by attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali.
Meanwhile, in a separate statement, PAS Youth deputy chief Muhammad Khalil Abdul Hadi (photo) accused Trump of trying to stop the rise of Islam.
"Trump's move is part of a campaign to halt the spread of Islam by stepping up negative sentiments towards Islam and its followers," Muhammad Khalil said.
He also accused Trump of fanning right wing extremism in the US.
In another statement released today, DAP Youth international chief Howard Lee questioned where Trump's ban would end.
"Belgium has the highest ISIS recruits per capita in the world. Is President Trump going to ban Belgians from entering the US?
"Malaysia is a Muslim-majority nation, which many consider as a hotbed with perfect conditions for IS operatives to be recruited and based. So, when is Malaysia's turn to enter the ban list?" Lee asked.

Trump enacted the travel ban last Friday, just a week after he took office.
The "Muslim ban", as it has come to be known, bars people from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Yemen, Sudan, Libya and Somalia from entering the US, regardless of their religion.
Following this, there have been reports of travellers from these countries being turned back upon arrival on US soil.
A federal US judge last Saturday granted a stay on the ban, following a lawsuit filed by two Iraqis detained at New York's JFK International Airport.- Mkini
