One is hoping to see her mother in Indonesia while the other hopes to contribute to the family's income now that her father is diagnosed with cancer.
SEREMBAN: The desire to reunite with her biological mother in Surabaya, Indonesia, spurred Efa Astrya Razak, 20, of SMK Seri Ampangan to work extra hard for the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) examination.
Her efforts paid off when she obtained a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.00.
Efa Astrya lost her father at the age of 10. Her mother, who worked as a domestic helper, returned to Indonesia four years ago, leaving Efa Astrya in the care of foster parents who encouraged her in her studies.
“Mother said if I want to see her there (in Indonesia), I needed to succeed and get a good job. Once I have money I can go visit her there,” said the permanent resident card holder, whose ambition is to become an economics expert.
Elsewhere, Norazlin Abd Muaziz from SMK Agama Sheikh Haji Mohd Said said she had not allowed the difficulties she faced to discourage her from excelling in the exam. She obtained a CGPA of 3.84.
The native of Taman Pedas Perdana, Rembau, said her father, Abd Muaziz Salleh, 58, had worked as a security guard before he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in September last year.
“Since then, my father has been out of a job while my mother Norzaidah Ahmad, 54, is a full-time housewife.
“Fortunately, my siblings have started working, and they are currently supporting my family,” said the youngest of four, who is hoping to further her studies at Universiti Malaya or Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in the fields of Arabic language or Shariah.
“I want to help my family when I get a job later. My father and mother have sacrificed so much and I must repay them,” said the 20-year-old, who hopes to become a lecturer. -FMT
