Muhyiddin barred from holding function at mosque

Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) president Muhyiddin Yassin, who is Pagoh MP, has been barred from holding a function at a mosque in Tangkak, Johor.
Muhyiddin was to attend a function at Masjid An-Nur in Pekan Kundang Ulu on Saturday, where he planned to provide rice and other contributions to the representatives of mosques and madrassahs within his constituency.
Pagoh Bersatu deputy chief Tahir Mohd Taat confirmed that the decision to cancel the event was conveyed in a letter by the Tangkak district qadi's office to Muhyiddin's community service centre.
"The letter was faxed this morning. Muhyiddin's function was to be in his capacity as an MP and not under the party.
"It's not a political ceramah. It was meant to provide contributions and was to be hosted in the mosque compound, not within the mosque," he told Malaysiakini when contacted.
In the letter dated May 31, signed by the Tangkak district qadi Mohd Nasri Rahman, it said the decision not to allow the function to go ahead was due to the Masjid An-Nur committee refusing to grant permission to Muhyiddin.
"After taking into account the views of the district leadership and also the committee of Masjid An-Nur Pekan Kundang Ulu, Tangkak, we are of the same view that permission cannot be granted to organise the function out of respect for the interests of all quarters," read the letter.
Tahir, who was responsible for submitting the request to host the function at the mosque, said he was surprised and disappointed by the decision.

He claimed the decision may be an outcome of certain manoeuvrings.
"We have changed the location, we will be hosting it at someone's house which is not far from the mosque," he said.
Muhyiddin was formerly deputy prime minister and Umno deputy president.
He was removed from his position as deputy prime minister in July 2015 after speaking up against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak over the 1MDB scandal and the multi-billion ringgit deposits in Najib's personal bank accounts.
Muhyiddin was in June 2016 also sacked as Umno deputy president.
He subsequently joined forces with former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to form splinter party Bersatu.- Mkini
