PUTRAJAYA – Prime Minister Najib Razak has announced a RM5 million allocation for the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) Yayasan Prihatin, an organisation formed to provide welfare support for the anti-graft agency’s employees.
Speaking at the commission’s 50th anniversary celebration at its new complex here today, he said the amount given by the government was also a symbol of his own support for MACC.
MACC had earlier during the event revealed that it had recorded seizures of assets and cash allegedly linked to corruption totalling RM334.53 million over the past year.
Najib said he appreciated the hard work MACC’s officers had put in to eradicate corruption, stressing that the problem posed a threat to the country.
He said the government needed to give back to them for their efforts by providing moral support over their welfare.
“Believe me, the government will continue to give our full cooperation to MACC’s fight,” he said.
In his speech, MACC chief commissioner Dzulkifli Ahmad said Yayasan Prihatin was launched to ensure the welfare of the officers as well as of their families.
He said the fund would be used to assist those who require financial aid and would be channelled for the purpose through certain MACC programmes.
“Anyone may contribute to the fund to support the founding of Yayasan Prihatin and all contributions will be recorded to ensure a transparent management,” he said.
Dzulkifli also said the RM334.53 million in assets and cash was seized by MACC between August 2016 and August this year.
He said the amount was higher than the RM55.02 million recorded during the same period the year before.
He said the agency had also seen a rise in information related to corrupt practices being received from the public by 2.63% over the same corresponding period.
There was also an increase in the number of arrests made by MACC by 6.04%, with 910 cases recorded from August last year to August this year.
MACC opened 952 investigation papers, which marked a 2.94% increase from the year before, he added.
