Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali's sister has jumped into the fray over corruption allegations related to sand mining, saying this was the reason she rejected PKR.
Ummi Hafilda Ali said she had been inundated with calls and messages asking if it was true her relative had been arrested by the MACC.
“Who am I to justify? [….] That's why I have opposed PKR from before until now, because I know who their pirate leader is.
“He speaks passionately about wiping out corruption, but he himself, his family and cronies […]. Just like the present ones.
“That's why I left Umno and openly expressed my dissatisfaction with the leadership of the prime minister (Najib Razak) and others,” she wrote on her Facebook.
Ummi, who first made headlines as a witness in PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim's first sodomy case, was last in the spotlight during the 13th general election when she joined Umno's campaign.
On Thursday, her nephew and three others were arrested over their alleged involvement in illegal mining of sand and gravel in the state.
In an immediate response, Azmin (photo) denied awarding mining tenders to his nephew.
"That allegation is not true," Azmin told reporters when met in Bandar Baru Bangi on Thursday.
He explained that all tenders for sand mining in the state are handled by Kumpulan Semesta Sdn Bhd (KSSB), which is a fully owned subsidiary of Menteri Besar Inc.
"The entire tender process is conducted by KSSB. I am not a board member of KSSB, I am not involved in any decisions.
"I am confident that KSSB officers have the highest integrity to ensure that the (tender) process is transparent and open," he added. -FMT
