KUCHING – Sarawak will benefit from a Barisan Nasional victory in the coming general election with Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at the helm of the government, says Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri James Masing (pic).
He said this was because Najib was the first top Malaysian leader to listen to the state’s request for its rights to be restored under the Malaysia Agreement.
“I am confident that the Federal Government under Najib will honour the Malaysia Agreement.
“If this request had been made during (former prime minister) Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s time, it would have been viewed with disdain and hostility and treated as preposterous, and high-handedly dismissed,” he said during a special one-day sitting to mark the 150th anniversary of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly on Tuesday (Jan 30).
In contrast, Masing said Najib had taken Sarawak’s needs and interests into consideration when making various decisions.
“As he is also the first Prime Minister to promise to let Sarawak reclaim what is rightfully ours in the Malaysia Agreement, we have faith that he will do what is required based on his track record,” said Masing.
He said it was therefore to Sarawak’s benefit for Barisan to win the coming election and Najib remain as Prime Minister to fulfil his unfinished business.
As for Pakatan’s proposal of Dr Mahathir as prime minister candidate, he said it would be a “disaster” for Sarawak.
“There is a saying that you can never make the same mistake twice, because the second time, it is a choice.
“Therefore, we do not agree with the Opposition for suggesting Tun Mahathir to be the prime minister of Malaysia after the election should they win. We will not make the same mistake twice,” he added.
