Ministry probing teen’s attempted suicide, teacher transferred

The Education Ministry is probing the case of the 13-year-old student who attempted suicide after she was accused of stealing her teacher’s iPhone, said its deputy minister P Kamalanathan.
He also revealed that the teacher has been transferred to the district education office.
“Of course the ministry is investigating it. It is a very serious issue and we intend to get to the bottom of it.
“The police are also investigating and the ministry will cooperate fully in the investigation.
“The teacher involved has been transferred to the district education office pending a full investigation into the issue,” he said to Malaysiakini in a text message today.
Kamalanathan said that he and officers from the Penang Education Department have met with the parents of the girl as well.
The girl’s family previously lodged a police report asking them to launch an investigation and act on the teacher.

The student, who hails from Nibong Tebal, Penang, had denied stealing her teacher’s mobile phone.
According to the police report, the Form One student was allegedly locked in a room by the teacher to extract a confession, despite the girl’s repeated denials.
The 13-year-old attempted to hang herself with a shawl later that night, but was discovered by her father and subsequently rushed to the hospital.- Mkini
