Four-term Anak Bukit assemblyman Amiruddin Hamzah says a three-cornered fight will not dampen his chances, given his track record.
ALOR STAR: Last November, Anak Bukit strongman Amiruddin Hamzah defected from PAS to join PPBM, one of four parties in the Pakatan Harapan (PH).
And with the 14th general election (GE14) just around the corner, the four-term assemblyman in the Kedah state assembly believes he stands a good chance of retaining Anak Bukit for his new party.
“When you decide to contest, you will definitely go in with the determination to win, especially when you are the incumbent and defending your seat.
“If I am chosen, I will not merely be representing PPBM, but PH. I think we stand a very good chance of winning the Anak Bukit seat.
“As a fourth-term assemblyman, I am not saying that I am very good, but people appreciate my contributions to society. I believe it will help us win,” he told FMT when contacted.
Amiruddin said he believed he would get support from those who know him personally and know his track record, even if they may have voted for another party before this.
On the possibility of a three-cornered fight, Amiruddin said this would pose little trouble to PH, given his track record.
The former Kedah opposition leader also pointed out that in order to unseat Barisan Nasional (BN), the only choice voters have is PH.
“Gagasan Sejahtera will not do the job. Why? Because they will be going into GE14 not to form a government of their own, but to just win a few seats and hopefully become kingmakers.
“The people should know fully well that the Gagasan will not in any way come to terms with PH, because of DAP and Amanah, so their only other choice is to work together with BN,” he said.
Gagasan Sejahtera is a pact that is led by PAS and also comprises Parti Cinta Malaysia and Parti Ikatan Bangsa Malaysia.
‘Majority not happy with BN’
Amiruddin pointed out that at least 60% of voters are not members of any political parties, so they will cast their vote for a party that meets with their aspirations, to vote for someone with a proven track record.
He claims that right now, the majority of people are not satisfied with BN, so their other option is either PH or Gagasan Sejahtera.
“However, voting for Gagasan Sejahtera is not a licence to put away BN because, at the end of the day, you will end up with BN++.
“So to unseat BN, the only choice is to vote PH. Vote for someone that you know.
“Being an incumbent, it can work for you or against you. If your track record is not good, it will work against you. If it is good, it will work for you.”
Prior to his defection to PPBM, Amiruddin had been anticipated to join Amanah, which is also part of PH, just like PPBM.
Amanah was formed by PAS leaders and members who left the party in the wake of the “progressive team”, led by former PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu, losing in party polls in June 2015.
PH now has nine assemblymen in the Kedah state assembly, PAS has seven and BN 20.
Amiruddin had stunned the state PAS leadership in May 2016 when he suddenly resigned from his post as the party’s Kuala Kedah division chief. He did not give any reasons for his decision.
In the last general election in May 2013, Amiruddin successfully defended the Anak Bukit state seat, on a PAS ticket, defeating Umno’s Hashim Jahaya with a 2,806-vote majority. -FMT
