It has been tough for MCA in the last two general elections after being wiped out of Kuala Lumpur, and campaigning in the 14th general election has not become any easier for the party.
MCA’s Cheras candidate Heng Sinn Yee found this out firsthand, putting on a brave face as she hit Yulek market and having to grapple with anti-establishment sentiment.
Clad in a dark blue BN T-shirt and a beige jacket over, Heng put on a wide smile as she greeted marketgoers.
One woman whose hand Heng shook also smiled back and said: “We will definitely support you.”
However, the woman continued to hold on to Heng’s hand and added in Cantonese: “We will support BN to become the opposition. Not a single vote will go to BN.”
Those around her then replied in agreement.
Heng did not appear taken aback and continued to smile.
The encounter had since been uploaded on Facebook.
Heng also had a chance encounter with her opponent, DAP’s Tan Kok Wai, who has been the Cheras MP for five terms since 1995.
Tan greeted Heng on a microphone and wished her the best of health. She gave birth earlier this month and is still in her confinement period.
“I hope you have good health, don’t overwork and eat good food to recover your health,” he said.
Heng merely put her hands together and nodded repeatedly with a wide smile.
Cheras will see a straight fight between Tan and Heng.
In the last general election, DAP won Cheras by a landslide, garnering 48,249 votes to MCA’s 10,840 votes.
