Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin (above) today expressed regret over what he termed as negligence by the authorities which had led to Umno Sungai Besar chief Jamal Yunos' first disappearance from a private hospital last week.
"Officers on duty handling such cases cannot be negligent. I feel disappointed [...] in Jamal's case, how could he have escaped from the hospital?
"I regret that it happened. Negligence has happened and I cannot allow it to happen (in the future)," Muhyiddin told reporters after observing an Immigration Department operation to check on undocumented migrants along Petaling Street in Kuala Lumpur.
He, however, added that any disciplinary actions to be taken would be done under the purview of the relevant authorities.
Muhyiddin was earlier asked if he had any message for Jamal and also for former Sabah chief minister Musa Aman who is wanted by the police over complaints of intimidation against Sabah Governor Juhar Mahiruddin.
Muhyiddin said both politicians should surrender themselves to the relevant authorities or risk being arrested as Malaysian police could seek assistance from their foreign counterparts including Interpol.
"It is best for them to surrender themselves as the police will take appropriate actions under the law," he said.
"It doesn't matter who they are. The police are probing these cases that we know have been reported in the media, offences were committed under Malaysian law and they cannot run away.
"Although they might try to escape, I believe the law will catch up with them," he stressed.
Arrest warrant out
Officers from the MACC have so far been unable to search Musa's properties as they claim his lawyers refused to cooperate, according to a report.
Musa is also claimed to have left the country with a “highly-placed” source within MACC reportedly telling The Star he went abroad before he could be blacklisted by the Immigration Department.
Inspector-general of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun, meanwhile, earlier today confirmed that an arrest warrant has been issued against Jamal as he failed to turn up despite given ample time to surrender and cooperate with regard to their investigations against him.
Jamal was last Friday charged under Section 290 of the Penal Code relating to public nuisance after he led a protest last October during which he smashed bottles of beer outside the Selangor state secretariat building.
He is also being investigated under Section 34 of the Arms Act 1960 for carrying a firearm while in a drunk or disorderly state.
Jamal was charged while receiving treatment at the Ampang KPJ specialist hospital for back pain.
However, he disappeared from the hospital before the bail process could be completed. He is believed to have fled to Indonesia. - Mkini
